The Finnish Union of Environmental Professionals (FUEP)
FUEP represents the interests of its members in professional, financial, educational and societal matters. FUEP is an affiliate of AKAVA (The Confederation of Unions for Academic Professionals in Finland). FUEP brings environmental professionals together. FUEP emphasises the professional ability and expertise of its members in environmental field. FUEP aims at enhancing environmental expertise in decision making processes. FUEP is a member of AKAVA's Collective Bargaining Organisations Public Sector Negotiating Commission (JUKO) and Delegation of Professional and Managerial Employees (YTN). FUEP co-operates effectively with other affiliated groups within AKAVA in the representation of interests. FUEP takes care of professional interests in a number of ways at the international level as well.

Members of FUEP work in the environment sector and have an academic degree in environmental and natural sciences. 70% of FUEP's working members are employed by the state, 18% by private companies and 11% by municipalities and local governments.

FUEP was founded in 1994 when three affiliate organisations of AKAVA merged to add weight to environmental matters within the confederation as well as in the labour market and among interest groups. Union of Geologist, Union of Geophysicists and Trade Union of Environmental Experts combined their resources to form The Finnish Union of Environmental Professionals (FUEP).

FUEP has approx. 4000 members.

Salary policy and labour market

The goal of the FUEP in respect of salary policy is to safeguard and improve the salary of its membership. The development of the income of our members should be in line with the development of incomes in general. The salaries of the membership should be based on the demanding nature of the work and the degree of responsibility, personal ability and the work performance. We draw special attention to the need to improve the salaries of young members and in general of those in the lower salary brackets.

FUEP closely monitors the labour markets for membership and also seeks to improve the labour market for them. Our goal is that the majority of members would work in permanent posts instead of short term contracts and that researchers with scholarships are able inexpensively to ensure adequate social security.

Safeguarding

For individual members FUEP offers daily consulting and advising in ordinary working life issues. The union lawyer is specialists on working life problems and legislation on working conditions. Members also get judicial aid in case of conflict. FUEP also helps to draw up a work contract, to interpret what is written in the collective agreements and to understand the legislation. As a matter of fact - nothing related to working life is a problem for us.

Safety in case of unemployment

All members with the exception of the self-employed, are members of the IAET-unemployment fund. A person who has been employed and a member of the fund for a specified period before becoming unemployed is entitled to earnings related allowance. The unemployment fee is included in our membership fee.

Research

Every year the union gives statistics on the salaries of its member groups and makes comparisons with the income development in society as a whole.

"Environmental Professional"

is a journal published by the FUEP for the benefit of its membership. "Ympäristöasiantuntija" is sent free of charge to all members. It appears four times a year and gives articles on the most essential matters in working life and articles written by our members.

Insurance

One of the goals of the Finnish Union of Environmental Professionals is to supplement the social security of its membership. The membership is covered by an agreement between the FUEPof and the IF Insurance Companies group on legal expenses insurance. This insurance covers all trial and court expenses of the policy-holder that have been caused by the event insured against. FUEP pays the premiums in full.

Student activities

Students may also join FUEP and can become members of the unemployment fund upon commencement of employment. The Student Committee is responsible for student activities. The Student Committee also acts as a cooperative body for the associations of students. Each autumn, events are organized at the various faculties to provide information to new students.
